The wait is over, 4 EPs and numerous mixtapes, Little Simz is ready to dropped her first full length album on September 18th. A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons will be all new material, and even more amazing she is releasing the album on her own label AGE 101:Music. I believe she is so talented that she doesn’t need any big record labels to promote her or hype her up, she lets her flow do the talking. I can’t for this album, check the video for the track Dead Body. Big Ups to Little Simz!
The Amy Winehouse documentary by Asif Kapadia dropped this summer, it gave you a glimpse into the falling of the great singer. The documentary introduced audiences into the world of Amy Winehouse, and it helped give context to her destructive habits. My favourite part of the documentary was the videos clips of Amy Winehouse performing in various places. It was evident that Amy loved to perform at intimate venues, it was like she could give her soul to the audience. While we miss her everyday, these newly discovered concert clips keeps her soul and legacy flowing. Check out the cover of Donnie Hathaway’s I love you more than you’ll ever know, it is superb!
It has been a minute but the music keeps flowin and the newest addition is Freddie Joachim newest EP Charcoal. If you aren’t familiar with Freddie Joachim, go check this guy out. He has some of the smoothest beats around, it is like you are traveling on a cloud when you are listening to his music. Charcoal is no different, it has a jazzy feel with some fluid percussions. I think May is my favorite track with the layered vocals, but the whole EP is solid. Check it out!
It seems of late that hiphop has to be either grimy beats or straight bangers but it is like the soulfulness is missing, but Juju Rogers is breaking that down with his new album From the Life of a Good-For-Nothing on the Jakarta Records Imprint. Juju brings that smooth flow over chilled out instrumentals. This album is a perfect soundtrack for a late night session, Juju Rogers has linked up with some great producers like JuSoul and TwitOne to create a real masterpiece. Highly Recommended!
Summer nights are all about chillin with friends, enjoying the warm weather, and listening to some great music. Zacari gives you the perfect soundtrack for your summer night. Cuffin’ Season is his new single which features IAMNOBODI on the keys with Awkwardsteez handling the beat. Zacari’ infectious mellow vocals mixed with some fluid horns makes the night just float away. I can’t wait to hear more from Zacari, highly recommended!
Rap music with Rnb hooks used to be associated with pure club bangers, but now it is Trap music. Go to any and trap music will be playing constantly throughout the night. Trap music doesn’t have to be a club banger, Masego x Medasin are breaking that connection down with their smooth jazzy production. Masego handles the vocals, the horns and while the pair are on the boards. Their sound is one of the freshest things I have heard in a long time, they are really pushing the boundaries of the genre. Go get their new EP The Pink Polo on Film Noir Imprint. Highly Recommended!
Canadians will argue whether Toronto is or has been the center for Canadian Rnb and Hiphop, but the last few years TO is making their case. Sorry folks, I am going to skip over Drake, but the Weeknd, I think was one of the first to put Toronto on the map. The success that The Weeknd garnered really helped many artists in Toronto get their music out to a wider audience. These younger artists are starting to turn heads, one of these artists is Allie, her sultry voice is so infectious. After hearing her music, it always feels too short, leaving you wanting more. Allie released an EP titled Strange Creature in 2013 but has slowly released some singles on her Souncloud page. The newest single I Cant Wait is a collaboration the producer Birthday Boy, and it is a smooth banger. Cop Allie’s EP and check the new single out.
I know I am a little late to the party maybe a year and a bit, but when I first heard Jarrod Lawson’s rendition of Bilal’s When Will You Call, I was blown away. Jarrod’s voice is a perfect balance of soul and rawness which is a pleasure to hear. It reminds me of a young John Legend. Jarrod released his self titled album in 2014, and it is a great album garnering SoulBrother.com’s soul album of the year. Don’t sleep like i did!
Sorry guys and gals, it has been a long minute since the last post. But let’s get to the music, no time to waste there is a lot of music that needs to be talked about it. The standout is Flofilz’s new Quiet Times Mix, the second instalment continues on that mellow sound, it ranges from your cool jazz to some acoustic soul. I personally think Flofilz has an unbelievable ear, his selections are on point. He takes you on a musical journey, leaving you guessing on the direction he is going to take you next. Don’t sleep on this mix, it is perfect for any late summer night.
Let’s have May 5th arrive as fast as possible, the ultra talented Maryland producer Oddisee will drop his new album The Good Fight. Oddisee is one of the best producer emcees out there, I think he is mostly accredited for his smooth productions but his fluid rapid fire delivery needs to be recognized. I remember first hearing Oddisee on Dj Jazzy Jeff’s Magnificent album in 2002 and wanting to hear more. While we wait for May 5th, Oddisee just dropped the first single That’s Love off the new album. The single may be more uptempo than what you are used to hearing from Oddisee but funky arrangement with the horns will get you head nodding for sure. Can’t wait for the album to drop!
