Canadians will argue whether Toronto is or has been the center for Canadian Rnb and Hiphop, but the last few years TO is making their case. Sorry folks, I am going to skip over Drake, but the Weeknd, I think was one of the first to put Toronto on the map. The success that The Weeknd garnered really helped many artists in Toronto get their music out to a wider audience. These younger artists are starting to turn heads, one of these artists is Allie, her sultry voice is so infectious. After hearing her music, it always feels too short, leaving you wanting more. Allie released an EP titled Strange Creature in 2013 but has slowly released some singles on her Souncloud page. The newest single I Cant Wait is a collaboration the producer Birthday Boy, and it is a smooth banger. Cop Allie’s EP and check the new single out.

I know I am a little late to the party maybe a year and a bit, but when I first heard Jarrod Lawson’s rendition of Bilal’s When Will You Call, I was blown away. Jarrod’s voice is a perfect balance of soul and rawness which is a pleasure to hear. It reminds me of a young John Legend. Jarrod released his self titled album in 2014, and it is a great album garnering SoulBrother.com’s soul album of the year. Don’t sleep like i did!
Sorry guys and gals, it has been a long minute since the last post. But let’s get to the music, no time to waste there is a lot of music that needs to be talked about it. The standout is Flofilz’s new Quiet Times Mix, the second instalment continues on that mellow sound, it ranges from your cool jazz to some acoustic soul. I personally think Flofilz has an unbelievable ear, his selections are on point. He takes you on a musical journey, leaving you guessing on the direction he is going to take you next. Don’t sleep on this mix, it is perfect for any late summer night.
I am really late to the party, the party is almost over but better show up than never! I stumbled on the Gramophone All Stars out of Spain, this group is amazing. They bring the energy of Ska and Reggae with the intricacies of Jazz all mixed together with some super soulful vocals. The fifteen piece band has been dropping albums since early 2010, and they have been reproducing some heavenly covers. The classic Summertime was the track that got me hooked, and most recently they dropped their newest album Jazzmaica, which they cover some classics from Stevie Wonder as well as Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Highly Recommended, go check these guys out!
I have mentioned Hiatus Kaiyote multiple times on this blog, and with each new release there is something that needs to be said. Well with the new single Breathing Underwater is no different, Hiatus Kaiyote has stepped up game. It is like they have further refined their sound, the composition and arrangement encompasses both simplicity and complexity while elegantly matches Nai Palm’s vocals. The Melbourne group will be releasing their new album Choose Your Weapon sometime soon, but in the meantime keep Breathing Underwater on repeat.
Let’s make this one quick, stop what you are doing and cop Idesia’s new album Golden Dreams. The LA soul band is creating some dope electronic soul. Sophie Dimitroff holding down the soulful vocals and the USC trained band creating these aural pleasures that makes you hit repeat. Just grab the new album!
The first thing you are going to notice when you first hear Kadhja Bonet’s voice is how angelic it is. The LA songstress effortlessly flows over different productions, especially on her new single LateNight Munchies, while still having a smooth and mellow sound. The new single was recorded at the Red Bull Academy in 2014 with RJ and Mark Maxwell on the production, the synthy cosmic sound pairs well with Kadhja’s voice. The only other single I have heard from Kadhja Bonet is Tears for Lamont, while it has more of a traditional worldly sound, her voice and lyrics are on point. Check her out!
2015 is starting strong with UK Soul starting off where it left off in 2014 with some smooth and mellow Rnb. Emmavie Mbongo or Emmavie for short just dropped a new single I Hope We Never Break Up. She is something super special, not only is she a vocalist but she is a super talented producer. It is a rare to find a combination of both, where they excel in both disciplines. The new single features Ego Ella May, and the mellow vibes just oozes out, it is perfect for starting your Saturday night. Emmavie is the going to making some noise in 2015, check her out!
Let’s just get to the chase, The Monophonics just dropped a new single Promises from their highly anticipated upcoming album Sound of Sinning. These guys bring pure funk and soul to every release, and Promises is no joke. I can’t wait for the full length album, but in the meantime check out the new single as well as L’Oncle Ben Soul’s album Coup De Reves, they were the backing band. Highly Recommended!
Tuxedo, the super group consisting of Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, are in getting into the Christmas spirit of giving. The group released a special christmas track. They flip the classic track Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time and add some pure funk, maybe it can be a new tradition of Funking up Christmas. I like Christmas music during the season, but with this track, I could love Christmas music year round. Check out this track and look for their full length album in the New Year
