Better late than never, the illustrious Damu the Fudgemunk dropped the next three volumes of his How It Should Sound Series on the ReDefinition imprint. He continues where he left off with his signature boom bap, jazzy arrangements, layered with some dope cuts. Damu is probably one of the most underrated producers in the game, his attention to detail of the arrangements is unbelievable. Each time you listen to the album you hear another layer that you intricately placed. Don’t sleep and cop this album!!!

Continuing on the sunday jazz fest, FloFilz drops the single Basement Jazz off his new album Speak Thru on the Jakarta Records imprint. If you haven’t heard of FloFilz, get caught up, the german producer is probably my favourite jazz hop beatmaker. He has the ear for slicing and chopping jazz samples over some dope drum patterns. Basement Jazz features the ill talented emcee Blu, his delivery over the beat gives another layer to already sick track. The new album drops December 4, 2015, Cop it!!
MA Doom: Son of Yvonne, the Master Ace album, dropped in 2012 the instrumentals sourced from MF Doom’s Special Herbs. The German producer Melodiesinfonie dropped a remix of the the track Think I Am, the smooth chilled beat does justice to both Masta Ace and MF Doom’s flow and delivery. At the end of the song, you are left with one thing to do, hit repeat!
What do you get when take Wu-Tang and mix it together with some heavyweight jazz artists, you get Shaolin Jazz. It is the brain child of brainchild of Gerald Watson and DJ 2-Tone Jones, they combine sampled Jazz instrumentals over Wu-tang lyrics. Shaolin Jazz’s newest project is a tribute EP to the late Donald Byrd. The second single is The Shimmy Roll which combines Old Dirty Bastard’s Shimmy Shimmy Ya and Byrd’s Jelly Roll. The new single is dope, I love their creativity and various arrangements which gives props to both artists. Highly Recommended!
I don’t know what it is, but there is something infectious about hearing a G-funk beat. You automatically are nodding your head and then slowly you are starting cutting the rug. Dr. Mad, the co-founder of the Voyage Funktastique, brings the heat with his new single Stanky. Certified pure G-Funk, it is pure poppin, I can only imagine if he got a singer or emcee to drops some vocals over the beat, it would so dope. Check it out!
In the last few years, there has been a resurgence or movement to bring back the Golden Era sound. Most recently, the US ambassador of hiphop has been bestowed upon the seventeen year old A-F-R-O Gutierrez, his skills and knowledge has been unparalleled to any other upcoming emcee. While the US has been struggling trying to get a legitimate Golden Era frontman, Europe has embraced the Golden Era sound and has been pumping out releases for a few years. INDIGOD out of Switzerland is the next group to step up to the plate to give us that classic boom bap sound. The group is comprised of Ryler Smith and Merlin Alexander, they bring their quick alternate flows layered with some dope beats which automatically gets your head nodding. Highly Recommended!
Jakarta Records is one of the most consistent record labels out there, always putting out the freshest releases never compromising on quality. I know I slept on this one but in July IAMNOBODI released a dope collections of some smooth classic hip hop beats. Jakarta Dubplate #1 transports you to the golden era of hip hop productions. IAMNOBODI parts away from his signature futuristic soul to delivers some chopped up soul samples with some tight rolling bass lines. I can’t stop listening to this collection, it is on heavy rotation.
The Mellow Orange imprint, even though it is a relatively small label, adheres to quality over quantity with its releases. The newest release Love Journey by Aso brings that Hiphop Jazz to another level, it has the swing and improvisation of Jazz, mixed in with those banging drums of hip hop. This album is perfect for a chilled night at home, it just flows effortlessly. I can’t wait to hear more from Aso. Highly Recommended!
The wait is over, 4 EPs and numerous mixtapes, Little Simz is ready to dropped her first full length album on September 18th. A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons will be all new material, and even more amazing she is releasing the album on her own label AGE 101:Music. I believe she is so talented that she doesn’t need any big record labels to promote her or hype her up, she lets her flow do the talking. I can’t for this album, check the video for the track Dead Body. Big Ups to Little Simz!
It has been a minute but the music keeps flowin and the newest addition is Freddie Joachim newest EP Charcoal. If you aren’t familiar with Freddie Joachim, go check this guy out. He has some of the smoothest beats around, it is like you are traveling on a cloud when you are listening to his music. Charcoal is no different, it has a jazzy feel with some fluid percussions. I think May is my favorite track with the layered vocals, but the whole EP is solid. Check it out!
