It is a rare that an artist can continually top their previous releases, but with each release, Little Simz is solidifying her place as a top emcee. The UK emcee has some real talent, her ability to flow over such a wide variety of rhythms and beats is unbelievable. It is hard to describe her sound, she even said herself “I don’t have a sound”. There are elements of rnb, mixed with some real bass, topped up with some dope flows. On the new release DROP 3000, IAMNOBODI provides the production on a couple of tracks. I think that collaboration is perfect, IAMNOBODI’s bangin drums over Little Simz rapid fire flow. They really need to do a full length album, in the meantime go download the album from her bandcamp page.

I know we are in the thick of the Christmas season, don’t let the stress get to you. Step back and relax, just have a coffee and listen to some great music. Well just go grab the coffee, DJM Trio has given you the great music. The live band just dropped their new album Cave Art. The talented band has recreated and reinterpreted some classic hiphop jams, the covers range from Pete Rock’s T.R.O.Y. to Jurassic 5’s Great expectations and there are many more gems. The live instrumentation brings the sound and rhythms to a whole new level, the trio’s layering and fills of the tracks almost create completely new songs. I listened to the first track and then immediately bought the album. Don’t sleep on this album!
Has anyone ever said, “Man, that track has too much soul”? I don’t think so. I think everyone has an appreciation for soul music, regardless of the music you regularly listen. Awon and The Phoniks are some big admirers of soul music. Awon’s new album Matte Black Soul heavily chops and samples old soul records with Awon handling the lyrical delivery. The album focuses on that classic soul based boom bap sound with The Phoniks and Awon producing most of the album. They masterfully create these up to date chilled out soul landscapes for Awon to rhyme on. Awon is a talented lyricist, easily spitting dope flows over the smooth and soulful production. Don’t sleep on this album!
It has been a long minute but let’s get the music going. If you are a connoisseur of french hiphop, you have to check the group Micronologie. These guys bring the heat, the new album Équations Verbales is a good mix of hiphop, jazz, and soul. On a couple of the tracks, they link up with PermOne of SoulSquare to handle the production and it brings a slightly funkier sound. I highly recommend this album, Micronologie brings tight flows and dope production.
Most people regard Dj Shadow’s Entroducing as one of the most influential instrumental hiphop albums, it was able to merge hiphop with rock, soul, jazz, ambient, and many other genres and bring hiphop to a wider audience. It was ground-breaking; it showed the intricacy and creativity behind the sampling and arrangement of behind the production. Blockhead has been one beat maker who continues to expand and push Dj Shadow’s musical imprint, he continues to utilize and create these heavy sampled productions while incorporating as many different genres as possible. Blockhead’s new album Bells and Whistles carries on with his signature musical landscapes, as a listener you get fully immersed floating away in aural pleasure. Bells and Whistles chops up vocal samples over banging drum arrangements with some soulful samples. Do not listen to just one track, no start and stopping, give yourself the time and give the album justice and let the whole thing play out. Highly Recommended!
I hate to say it but if your production caters to the golden era sound, you almost gain this instant credibility and recognition. It is like you have this refined and elevated ear that the heads appreciate. The german beatmaker Je$u$ has this signature sound golden era style but he doesn’t need the instant recognition. Once your hear his production, you realize this guy is the real deal. Je$u$’s remixes are on point, it sounds so natural that you think the artist was present in the studio with him. One of my favorite remixes of his is Afu Ra’s Whirlwind Thru Cities, the mellow beat has pure jazziness exuding out. Check out his beat tapes as well, highly recommended!
To break it in the music industry and make a name for yourself, it is a hustle and grind. There is so much more outside the music that really decides whether you are successful or not. Sinitus Tempo has experienced this to the max, I have been following Sinitus Tempo over the years and have seen the ups and downs this cat has experienced. But through every experience, thick or thin, he is always dedicated to making some quality music. Ten Wonders is his new project and he has stepped up his game, he has managed to amalgamate a bunch of different styles throughout the album. It is like the album is a dedication to his grind. If you like dope jazzy hiphop, cop this album! He is following in the footsteps of the great Nujabes, but defining his own path. Support Sinitus Tempo by copping the album, Highly Recommended
The Betty Ford Boys are back! The super trio are ready to drop their new EP Uppers and Downers, they have continued with their signature west coast gangster rap sound. The new single So Fine keeps on with those smooth layered beats with perfectly timed chopped up vocal samples. If you haven’t heard of these guys, go cop the new EP and their debut album Leaders of the Brew School, it was one of my favorite albums in 2013. Betty Ford Boys come correct!
The low profile dutch producer Koen has dropped his six instalment of his Ouputs series, he has been dropping these set of EPs since August 2010. In the 6th instalment, Koen gives you some soulful heavy bass hiphop, the bass maybe heavy but the sound is more chilled and laid back with this atmospheric feeling. It fits perfectly with fall and the colder weather. Seeing the progression from the 1st instalment to now, you get to see and hear different sounds and styles that Koen is a feeling at the time of release.I have loved every release, Koen is a talented producer and he comes correct, only dropping top quality music. If you haven’t checked out the Outputs Series, you are missing out! Highly recommended
L’Orange the talented beat smith is back with the EP After The Flowers, he is following up from his highly acclaimed album The Orchid Days. With every new release, L’Orange teams up with a new roster of artists proving his creativity and talent. Go cop this free EP, Big ups to L’Orange.
