K-Def and The 45 King have really outdone themselves on their new album Back to the Beat. These two beat smiths are legends, they have produced for such giants as KRS-ONE, Jay-Z, and Ghostface Killah and this new instrumental album is no joke. It is something special to have them collaborate on album and equally contribute their signature sounds and styles to each beat. I really won’t do the album justice trying to describe it, but I think it is one of the best album this year. Highly Recommended!

I know that Statik Selektah album dropped about a month and half ago but I am just getting into it and I am really feeling it. Maybe I was just expecting more of another album with the signature Statik Selektah sound, banging drums with some dope soul samples. But Statik Selektah has really stepped his game by adding a layer of jazziness. The jazz samples are cut and chopped up with precision like he has been doing it for years. The stand out track to me is the Slum Villain track with Joey Badass, I think it is one of the best on the album. The horns layered with Joey Badass’s raw and gritty flow is so smooth. The way that Statik Selektah has produced this album, you can really see in the future that more producers will be incorporating more jazz into their sounds. There are so many highlights on this album, go cop it!
I have been talking about Little Simz for a quite awhile, I don’t think she needs an introduction. Little Simz is the ageless wonder, her youthfulness is evident by the variety of producers she uses, her maturity is apparent by her effortless flows over these complex beats. I think what sets Little Simz apart from other emcees is that she releases music purely for the music, the quality of the music is first, the business is second. All of Little Simz’s releases are free, her newest release AGE 101: DROP 2 is no different and again her flow and delivery are on point. I don’t think you need convincing to get this EP, head over to her bandcamp page below.

It is always a nice surprise when Freddie Joachim drops a new release. He teases you with some singles and some vines on his Facebook and then unexpectedly drops a full EP. Leaves is the new release, while his signature jazzy HipHop style is still present, I think he expanding his sound with different instruments and drum arrangements. I think he is master at layering his tracks, each time you listen to a track you hear a different layered sound. Again, Freddie Joachim comes correct, highly recommended!
The heads are always referring the golden era of hip hop, and how those were the days when music was made with substance. The dj, the producer, the emcee were on point bringing their best with the essence of making great music. I agree with the heads that the essence of making great music has been lost to making money, but not everyone in the music industry is trying to make stacks, there are artists who still strive for great music. Dj Nu-Mark of Jurassic 5 and Slimkid3 of Pharcyde have just dropped a nameless album on the Delicious Vinyl imprint and they are aiming for great music. Slimkid3’s smooth flow and delivery fits perfectly over Nu-Mark’s golden era production. This album transports me to the mid nineties, great beats and rhymes, highly recommended!
Stan Forebee is back, he just dropped his new EP Reflections. He continues where he left off on his previous release Jazz Sessions by still masterfully creating these jazzy landscapes over subtle hiphop beats. In the new EP, he definitely has expanded his sound to include more of a relaxed ambient style. This new style really fits the title of the EP, you just play this EP and you are automatically in this deep thought. Cop this EP and sit back and relax. Highly recommended!
The two time group DMC Champions C2C just dropped a remix of the Stevie Wonder’s Superstition and they bring the heat. These guys are the real deal, they aren’t your typical scratch djs, they are party rockers who aren’t afraid cross genres and use different sounds in their production. The scratch purists may not like deviation from the hip hop sound, they can’t argue about C2C’s sound scratch skills. C2C comes correct!
Check out the remix, it is a free download!
One of the most astonishing thing about music is that its ability to transcend language, culture, and geography. Regardless of our differences, music is a commonality and it can be a basis for unification. The Dutch producer Tantu captures this trait through his debut album Language of Beats. Tantu has travelled throughout Europe and Asia gathering different influences to create this laid back album. The album is a historical journey through hiphop from the early boom bap to the modern trap while keeping the mellow sound as a cornerstone. This album is precisely crafted with tight drums and smooth samples,I highly recommend this album. Set back and listen to the chilled out beats.
Amerigo Gazaway, the mash-up king, just dropped the second instalment of his marvelous collaboration Yasiin Gaye, While the first instalment primarily focused on Marvin Gaye’s singing, this release delves deeper into Marvin’s production. With the changing focus, Amerigo Gazaway was able to expand the collaboration by featuring other artists such as Talib Kweli, the Temptations, and Chuck Berry.Don’t be worried, Marvin’s vocals are still blended with Mos Def’s raps. I highly recommend this album, don’t sleep and cop this album.
The remix king Amerigo Gazaway dropped a new single off his side two collaboration Yasiin Gaye. He doesn’t make just regular mash up albums; Amerigo Gazaway is a master of interweaving deconstructed soul samples with chopped up raps from such greats as De La Soul and Pharcyde. The new single takes Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey’s Travellin’ Man and is blended with Marvin Gaye’s Distant Lovers. This is Mr. Gazaway’s second edition of Travellin Man in the series but he eloquently creates a completely new song that is only related by the name. Highly Recommended! Go download the single and look for album Yasiin Gaye: The Return (Side Two) coming out soon.
