Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great restful holiday filled with joy, laughter, and most of all music. Let’s get the year started quick and right. Jakarta Records is probably one of the most consistent music labels always releasing top quality music. They have a wide range of artists from Jazz to Hip-hop including the illustrious songstress Nanna.B. After the success of her two highly acclaimed EPs, the Danish singer released her full-length album Solen. It is a heater, her voice is so dope! It is hard to categorize her sound, it is a mix of hip-hop, RnB and soul sprinkled with some jazz and electronic. The production on the album is tight never overwhelming Nanna.B’s voice. Go cop the album!

It has been a few years since the changing of the global album release day changing from Tuesday to Friday but I think this probably the most excited I have been for Friday releases. Two Jazz heavyweights, Jose James and Cecile Mclorin Salvant, are dropping their albums today. Jose James’ new album is a tribute to the late great Bill Withers and man it is a heater!! Jose puts his own style on all Bill’s hit songs, my favorite is the duet with Lalah Hathaway on Lovely Day.  Go check it out!

Madame Salvant’s fifth studio album The Window is also full of tributes to some RnB greats such as Stevie Wonder and the late Aretha Franklin.  The cover of One Step Ahead is amazing, it is really different from the original but still so smooth. Cecile’s voice is still on point!

Don’t hesitate and take a listen!

Abstract_Orchaestra_MadVillian

Christmas is coming early this year, Nov 2nd exactly!! The dope all-star hip-hop band Abstract Orchestra will be dropping their second length full-length album Madvillain that day. Following their debut album, which was an ode to J Dilla, Abstract Orchestra commemorates the influential collaboration of Madlib and MF Doom and the album Madvillainy.  The first single Fancy Clown dropped a couple of days ago, and from just listening to it, I had to pre-ordered the vinyl.  The production and arrangements create another layer for you to explore while always staying true to the original. Madlib and MF Doom would definitely approve, go cop this album!!

Uhuru

Let’s get back to the jazziness and the hip-hop! I am pumped to introduce the next group, the trio consists of Summer Sons and C Tappin. Summer Sons are a brotherly group out of Bristol via London with Turt on the lyrics and Slim on the beats. C Tappin is a multi-talented pianist and lyricist provided support to the brothers. The group’s debut album Uhuru, which was inspired by the people and places of Tanzania, is probably one of the smoothest jazz hop albums I have listened to in the last few years. I listened to the album on repeat for two days straight!! The rhymes just float effortlessly over the fluid jazz samples. Go cop this album!

Check out their EP Undertones

Unity Suite and Rise

It has been a really long minute since the last post! Summer is almost done and with the temperature dropping, fall is upon us. While I love summer and the warm temperatures, there is something about fall with the changing colors of the leaves that I just love.  I think it may be the cooler temperature that makes me want to bundle up and stay home listening to some music. Mecca:83 aka Rise, the spiritual jazz alter ego,  just dropped a new single called Unity, and it is fitting for the changing weather. It is a free EP with some remixes from Handbook and Chopef. Highly recommended! Go cop it and warm up to some smooth jazz!

Kadhja Bonet

June 8th can’t come any faster!! The illustrious Kadhja Bonet will be dropping her second full-length album Childqueen. If you have never listened to her before, the first thing you will notice is her angelic voice, it is so smooth and heavenly. You are automatically taken to a divine place. Kadhja Bonet dropped two singles for you to get a sample of the new album, and they are on point. Don’t waste and click play below.

DJM Trio Cave ArtII

Almost 3 years and a half and the underground group DJM Trio will be releasing their second album Cave Art II, which continues where they left off in December 2014.  Their signature sound of fusing hip-hop and jazz continues, their first single is a cover of Solange’s Cranes In The Sky.  You can’t characterize the album as either a hip-hop album or jazz one. There will be times when you are listening and you hear the improvisations and layering of a classic jazz thing then all of sudden the boom bap sound drops. I love their sound, go cop this album on April 20, 2018!!

Tom Misch

The temperature is rising, the sun is out, and the birds are chirping. It looks like winter is coming to an end. I can’t wait for summer and for those long hot days. Tom Misch’s new single, It Runs Through Me ,  gives off that summer vibe. He will be releasing his new album Geography on April 6th. The new single has this samba and Bossanova-esque vibe,  his smooth vocals get you dreaming about the beach.  The legendary group, De La Soul, features on the new single and still providing those signature raps.  Check out the single below and look out for the album in April.

Sly5th

It has been a real long minute since the last post, but no need to delay and let’s get to the music! Sly5thAve, out of Brooklyn, just dropped his new album The Invisible Man which is an orchestral tribute to Dr. Dre. Sly5thAve’s release is probably the freshest album I have heard this year. While there have been lost of tribute albums dropping this year, The Invisible Man is unique in that it includes different elements from the classical orchestra sound, jazz rhythms, and the vocals on the tracks are on point. Sly5thAve arranges all these various sounds flawlessly while still staying true to the original. Don’t sleep and go cop this album!

Nai Palm

Australian Soul music is coming correct! Nai Palm of the supergroup Hiatus Kaiyote is set to drop her first solo acoustic album Needle Paw on October 20th. She dropped the first single Homebody earlier this month and it is smooth as butter. Her angelic voice flows effortlessly over the chilled strums of the guitar. I can’t wait to hear the whole album. Check out the single and the new album!
